December 8th: The Pope – A traditional act of veneration to the Immaculate Conception

December 8th every year starts: 16:00

On the occasion of the Feast, the Pope, as a tradition, pays homage to the Immaculate on the day of his feast, praying and placing a crown of flowers at the base of the Column of the Immaculate at Piazza Mignanelli. This tradition began on December 8th 1953 by Pope Pius XII on the occasion of the Opening of the Holy Mariano Year

The firefighter’s gesture, which is still more ancient (since 1923), follows, with a 25-meter high ladder, they bring the flower crown on the arm of the statue. Attending various authorities

Curiosity:

The column was erected in 1857 to seal the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, established in 1854 by Pius IX. Why exactly at Piazza di Spagna? Because Spain was the country most committed to the dogma. And at the Spanish Square was based the Spanish Embassy at the Holy See.
